It’s November a week before “Black Friday” and the PS3 has one GREAT title out right now, Modern Warfare 2. A couple of months ago it was Guitar Hero release after Guitar Hero release and a few, very short, movie to game releases. As for exclusive titles, they emerged very randomly and with equally random expectations. PS3 spends so much time advertising sequels to games and spend very little time informing us of new exclusive titles. So unless you whiz around the internet catching tidbits about upcoming releases, you will not know about the better titles until they are sold out. Then, when you get it it will be discounted and will have a diminishing online community.

I know you are reading this review wondering “why 5 stars then?”. Because I DO scan the forums and youtube videos on a regular basis trying to find out what to spend that $70 on(ah California gotta love the taxes). A continuing addition and overall money-saver is a Blockbuster Game Pass. This helps me save so much money, from being able to try the high-hype movie to game titles that have no online or replay factors and a 10 hours storyline, so I can spend that $$$ on a game worth buying. The only downside is that there is a big dead period between summer and the holidays and I tend to switch over to PC games to play some of the titles I missed during the go-go time with PS3 titles. Or take some inexpensive risks with the independents making games released on the PS Store.

So to summarize, the PS3, just like any of these systems, is as good as the games your playing. The PS Store is a great addition and the updates that have been released over the past 5 years have fine tuned theis machine to be the best system out there. Games I would recommend if you are buying a PS3 as a gift is either Modern Warfare (the first one is 2 years old and still has a huge online community), Madden (can’t go wrong with Madden) and/or a Playstation Network Gift Card with AT LEAST $50 on it, so they can download a game of their choice.

The 60GB PS3 is worth all of the $300 with the 2 games thrown in. It works great albeit, somewhat noisy when the cooling vent comes on but allows you to download games, applications, music from the website.

The blue ray player works great and it has ports for memory cards and 4usb devices. The ganes look and play great although charging of the wireless controller is cumbersome and I recommend you do it via a computer or plug in wall adapter usb.

Of course you can still play regular DVD’s and it is backwards compatible to the ps1 for those like myself with an extensive playstation collection of games.

It fell 3.5 feet off a counter to a carpetted floor when I was repositioning the unit and i thought I just blew $300 because it is at last 12 pounds. It still works with no problems at all. That I was amazed by. If you live in a warm climate as I do(Florida, USA) be warned it blows warm air exactly as a sac heater does while in use. So the area will get warmed up where you locate the unit.

I m very happy with this product.

To start I own all of the current next gen consoles and two PS3s, the 60GB (original) and the the 80GB. Neither of the PS3s have ever had any issues, they still run fine and have actually had the most play in my household over the other consoles. My reasoning for stating the 60GB model to be the best is for all of the components released with it. It has the most to offer, it’s not just a hard drive size, (which you can more than easily swap for something larger, I put a 250GB in, which I’ll discuss in detail later) It has a multi-card reader on the front port and four usb ports, but unlike later models it has a built-in emotion engine which are the physical guts of the PS2. Thus allowing you full backwards compatibility, which only a couple of the later models have software emulators for. However due to this, the 60GB model is somewhat heavier than the others as it has more bits to it. If you want to continue to play your old PS2 games and switch over to the PS3 the only draw back is that you’ll want to buy a PS2 memory card loader and this is true for any of the PS2 ready PS3s. As far as picking a PS3 over the other consoles, the PS3 truly gives you more bang for you buck. You can’t beat the price point for what you’re getting, not only are you getting a game console, but you are also getting a blu-ray player and media center, and unlike the Xbox 360 there is no subscription fee to play online.

      Swapping HDD
Above I mentioned I swapped my Hard drive for a larger one. If you intend on doing this, which is generally a good idea as you’ll find that you’ll fill up the hard drive pretty quickly if you purchase a lot of digital content. I recommend swapping before you start buying movies and tv shows however as these have a tighter DRM lock than games. The games you can always redownload at any time if you decided to delete them to make space. However the video store only tracks your purchases for under 24 hours. Anything beyond that and you’re download history will be empty. The swapping issue is that even if you back up your movies to an external hard drive or PC, the copyright information becomes invalid if you reload it to a new hard drive even if it is the same PS3. The only way I found around this, is to copy your movies/shows to your PSP via the PS3 in menu copy (port) option, back up your PSP data card, wipe it, repeat until you’ve backed up all your data. Once the new Hard drive is installed (which should only take a couple minutes to physically swap) you can proceed to copy the data from your PSP to your PS3, one memory card at a time. So if you’re buying the PS3 new and want to upgrade the hard drive, hold back on movie purchases until you are ready to make the upgrade. Good luck.

I purchased my 60gb PS3 on New Year’s Day 2007 for $600. Initially, it collected dust as most of the launch titles weren’t that interesting (except for Resistance: Fall of Man). I tended to go back to my 360 quite a bit so that I could play Gears of War (stunning). At that time I was convinced that the 360 was the best console. As time wore on, I ventured into blu-ray movies and began using my PS3 more and more. The library of exceptional games for the PS3 increased and I began playing it more and more. It’s 2009 and my PS3 is now the #1 console in my home. I rarely play my 360 anymore (RRoD, loud, multiplat games look and play just as good on the PS3, exclusives are more interesting) and my Wii is pretty much a joke. I like being able to go back and play my old PS1 and PS2 games (especially Shadow of the Colossus) if I want. They look pretty good on my big screen LCD via HDMI. My blu-ray collection has increased dramatically since launch, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The user interface is cleaner-looking and easier to use than the 360’s. The PSN is free as opposed to the 360’s $50 annual fee for Xbox live. Built-in wifi. Four USB ports. I can go on and on. After all is said and done, I don’t regret spending that ungodly $600. My PS3 is still going strong.

The modren world relies on electronics, they fuel our needs and wants as an expanding global comminuity. Some are better then other then others, one thig is the video game market! with three high tech machines on the market it may seem impossible tho chose. hundereds upon thousands of games to chose from…. PS3 the latest and greatest system out today!
November 17, the air is cold people are excited, nervous, and trembling the clock is ticking 5….4….3….2….1. With the mad rush of loyal fans they push through the doors, the Playstation3 has launched. As i make my way to the check out counter i see it, a 60Gb waiting for me, with resisitance in my hand i walk out the door hoping not to get muged… Now i have the ulitmate system, it can play all my ps1,ps2,ps3, and not to mention (blueray) dvds which all display in full 1080p! The graphics are the realist or the real graphics, not to add in a 60gb HDD. The ps3 seems like it’s limitless… four usb ports, bulit in wifi, up to seven wireless bluetooth controllers, HDMI (high def mulitimedia interface), and you can even use the ps3 as a home computer or super computer.
The PS3 is a powerhouse, it’s good for anyone who wants an all in one media set up. High def games, movies, music, photos, internet browser. I cannot begin to explain how great the PS3 is, yes i own all systems and the 360 does not even come close to the PS3. If your looking for the next gen system stop! The PS3 is everything you need plus more, it’s avalible in a 20GB and 60GG model…. 60Gb is $599.99.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE NOTHING LIKE HAVING A CLICKER HANDY STILL DONT KNOW WHAT ARE ALL THE COLOR BOTTONS FOR BUT PERFECT FOR WHAT I NEED IT ALSO LOVE THE ONE BOTTON PRESS FOR DIF/LANGUAGES TIGHT… INDEED A GOOD BUY. A MUST HAVE UNLESS U GOT ALL THE TIME TO BE PLAYING AROUND WITH A CONTROLER TO PLAY AND REWIND UR MOVIES O KEY WORD “REWIND” U CAN ACTUALLY REWIND WITH THE BD REMOTE UNLIKE WITH THE GAME CONTROLLER

      Tanlioco January 14, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Two design flaws render this otherwise fine remote too frustrating to use for controlling Blu-ray and DVD movies.

      1. No backlight or glowing keys, so operation in the dark is difficult. This wouldn’t be a big issue if the buttons were better laid out and perhaps had some clues by touch to clarify their functions. But this *is* a big issue because of flaw #2…

      2. The giant Stop button is positioned right between the Play and Pause buttons — and it’s the same size and shape. It’s also right between the Skip Back and Skip Forward buttons, horizontally.

It takes an impressive level of ineptitude to design a remote like this. Years of R&D on DVD remotes have wisely made Stop buttons smaller than other buttons and put them out of the way. Sony ignored all that wisdom. It’s far too easy to inadvertently tap the PS3 remote’s large, centrally positioned stop button. And unlike most decent DVD players, the PS3 has no “Are you sure you wish to stop the disc?” warning for when you do. So when you accidentally stop your movie (which you will), it’s a long and irritating process to find your place again on a Blu-ray disc. It can take 5 minutes, depending on how many warnings, commercials, previews, and animated menus you have to get through again (some of which you can’t skip past). And then you have to find where you were, risking seeing images and chapter titles that give away things you really didn’t want to know yet. All this wasted time can kill the flow of a movie.

Hopefully there’s a better remote that works with the PS3… one that was designed by people who test their products in real-world circumstances.

      Megowan January 14, 2010 at 5:27 pm

First, the clamshell package that this item was wrapped in is particularly nasty. A blowtorch or a chainsaw are the appropriate tools to open it. I ended up using a heavy duty cable cutter to get to the pearl inside.

The remote paired easily and worked fine. It delivers the functionality it promises, although not elegantly.

      1) It is thicker than most remotes. So when you hold it in one hand and press the buttons with your thumb, your hand tires quickly (in a few seconds) while trying to keep hold of the remote. My hands are of average male size.

      2) There are too many buttons and most are too small for comfort. Most of the buttons are used rarely, if ever.

      3) The navigation pad (the one in the middle encircling the Enter button) does not work with the Web Browser, so you still need to have the game pad around, for a complete Media Center experience.

      O'Riley January 14, 2010 at 6:08 pm

The remote is fine, works very well but it has 2 issues that are more annoying then anything else. the buttons are very sensitive to being pressed and don’t have much resistance to being pressed so even tossing a light blanket on top of it caused a button press, also the PS3 will turn on on any button press, it doesn’t matter which button any will turn it on, that might be fixable with a firmware mod but as they haven’t done it since the release of the remote years ago they probably won’t. Otherwise its very good at being just a remote, just be careful of where you put it and what you place around or on top of it.

      Callahan January 14, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Ok, so you’ve read a few 1-star reviews that mention that the Stop button is sandwiched in between Play and Pause. And if you’re like me, you may think to yourself, “Meh, that’s not a big deal.” However, let me make two points here:

      1. Unless you’re very careful, you WILL hit Stop when you meant to hit Pause, and you will do this OFTEN
      2. Most blu-ray discs don’t support auto-resume (A step backward from DVD, but I digress)

You know what this means, don’t you? If you’re watching a movie and the telephone rings, you’re gonna hit Stop on the remote accidentally and end up back at the PS3 menu, and you’re gonna have to start the disc again from the beginning. This happened to me 3 times tonight while watching Dark Knight, and if you’re easily offended, you would not have wanted to be in the room with me to hear the profanity that was spewed from my lips.

I am ANGRY at the person at Sony who is responsible for the design of this train wreck of a remote, because I know they did it on purpose. Nobody could be so stupid as to do a thing like that unintentionally.

I was so excited to get this for such a great deal on Black Friday. I received it earlier today and after setting it up, it appears my system was close to being Dead-On-Arrival. It would freeze up completely about 2 minutes after every power on, and the system could not find any wireless networks when I tried scanning. After re-scanning for wireless networks three times, it would come back with a 80130128 hardware failure message. I was screwed… So much for the promotion if I had to return the system back to Amazon, as I would have to return the games too. I wasn’t about to get a refurbished console from Sony on a brand new system.

With the help of Google, I was able to find out that the wifi card in the PS3 either had a loose antenna wire or the system had a bad firmware flash at the factory. One post said that a firmware update on their faulty system fixed the problem. Well, I downloaded firmware 3.10 from the SCEA website, loaded it onto my iPod nano, and installed it. Success! There wasn’t a single hitch in the update process! The system no longer freezes shortly after booting up and the Wifi card is now able to find and connect to wireless networks.

I hope this doesn’t happen on anybody else, but if it does, I hope they can find some help in this review. I am leaving one star off for the slip-up in quality control from the factory and the unnecessary stress it caused ;) . All in all, a five star system.

Love it, the PS3 is aswesome and the slim package makes it even better. My favorite feature would have to be the blue-ray player, excellent performance from it imo; and the system as a whole.

      Clements January 14, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Buying this was an extremely smart idea, not only did i get the ps3 but it came along with 2 free games that are really mind blowing. The ps3 runs fine and quiet. The games are great and have a lot of game play value. This was truly a great deal. One of my best buys i ever made. :D :D
