Advice On transformers bumblebee

transformers Advice On transformers bumblebee

My 3 year old just opened this toy for Christmas & was so excited! As you can imagine it went to bed & nap with him. The next day we traveled 4 hours in the car to visit family for more Christmas & 1 hour into the trip he said it broke. We thought the battery had died but after replacing the batteries & taking the entire toy apart we realized the audio chip must be bad. We’re in the process of trying to return it (the reciept is at home 4 hours away) but all the stores are sold out ’cause of Christmas. Awesome toy but it needs to last longer than 24 hours with a VERY excited – & now dissappointed – 3 year old boy!

If my son did not like this so much, I would have gladly returned it. As one reviewer noted, the instructions are sooo difficult to understand you’re much better off using common sense. We just got it today and we spent more time trying to make the parts fit whenever we try to transform it from a car to a robot to car again, than my son actually playing with it. We tried it twice today and both times were frustrating. As a mom, I think this is an expensive headache. Although I must admit, my 8-year old enjoys playing with it. The headache is for the adult who tries to transform it. As I told my son, transforming it should be part of the fun that comes with a toy like this… but with not this one.

My friend has this toy and we tried to transform it. We asked an adult to help us and he couldn’t figure it out either. In the end, I ended up wasting about 45 minutes trying to transform it w/t the instructions. Also, in the movie, Bumblebee’s “wings” aka doors never flipping around or wobbling. In this toy, I can’t even find the sockets for the circle things that is supposed to hold the doors in place. I also found the firing missile controller thing but it didn’t work. The thing to make Bumblebee speak is lame too. The hood is super-bad too. Every time I try to pose it, in the process, the hood keeps falling apart. This gets me REALLY, REALLY FRUSTRATED, ANNOYED AND ANGRY!!! IN CONCLUSION, DO NOT BUY IT!!! As all of my friends would say, it’s a ripoff!!!!!

I’d been wanting to purchase Ultimate Bumblebee since the first version was released with the first Transformers movie, but I never bought one. After seeing that a second version was being released, I decided to go ahead and pick one up, and I’m glad I did.

This is a very large Transformer with a good bit of weight. There are some pieces that feel fragile, but it is a sturdy figure overall. Its true that the transformation on this figure is somewhat complex, but once you transform it a time or two, its really not that difficult. The instructions are a little hard to follow, but using common sense goes a long way as there are a good number of holes and pegs that fit together during the transformation to vehicle mode that make it pretty obvious what to do once you’ve seen where the pegs line up with the holes (ie. as when putting the arms into the body).

There are a couple of reasons that I like this ROTF version better than the original. One reason is because of the updated sounds. I was never impressed with lines such as “You’re my first human friend” or the repeated playing of Whip-it (not a bad song, I just didn’t like it with the Bumblebee figure for some reason). The sound clips and phrases are much better in this new version in my opinion, and the inclusion of “You’ve got the touch” seems much more appropriate to me.

Of course there are a few things that keep this figure from being perfect. For one thing, the box clearly states that the figure responds to motion, and the instructions say that the figure responds to both voice and motion. I’ve had two of these figures (had to take the first one back due to a defect) and neither of them respond to voice or motion as stated. After initially pressing a button and then waiting, the figure will perform another “action” every 5 to 10 seconds of being idle up to about 30 second before going to sleep, which at first made me think it was responding to me, but then I realized that if I pressed the button once and then made no sounds or movements, it followed the exact same pattern with no movement or sound input. After having two figures with exactly the same issue, I wonder if this was a planned feature that made it to the box art, but never made it to production (as far as it being in the instruction sheet, its clear that the instructions are from the first version with a new header at the top of the page, as the figure shown in the instructions has the old style headlights on the front of the car). Please let me know in the comments if I’ve somehow missed the correct way to get the sound and motion sensor to work as I’ve even emailed Hasbro about it and their answer so far has been “we don’t know.”

There is also an issue where in robot mode the wings can make a loud clicking sound, almost like something is popping inside or is going to break (although I don’t think it would actually break anything from this). After watching closely I’ve found that there are two things that can cause this. One, if the figure is posed in such a way that it’s leaning slightly forward, the wings can get caught up on the tires. Making the figure stand up straight, or even with a very slight lean backwards can alleviate this issue if this is the cause. The second cause appears to be related to the rubber pieces that connect the wings to the body. Since these are kind of long and tube shaped, if they are “twisted” the wrong way when the doors are attached to the figure’s back as wings, the added tension, although slight, seems to be enough to cause the clicking noise. Disconnecting the offending door(s) and rolling it 360 degrees forward or backward (depending on which way it was twisted) seems to help. Because the rubber connector is a solidly colored tube shape, its really hard to tell if it’s twisted the wrong way, so some experimentation may be needed if the clicking sound is happening.

OVERALL: A very good figure that I’d recommend picking up if you’re considering it. It’s a great deal of fun, and the animatronics do make him seem a little more real than a normal figure. My kids love when I get Ultimate Bumblebee out, and even my wife has been telling me how cool she thinks it is, which is a first for her with any Transformer figure.

Regrettably perhaps, I have both versions of this toy. I would like to see different Ultimate toys (most notably Optimus Prime) in the future. This seems like the next-generation of transformers in many ways, with the animatronics and the audio content. But aside from that, purely as a transformer, it’s still quite worthy to own. Large, very realistic, good detail. Not so easy to transform, especially as some of the connections need some carefully-applied force to engage/disengage (a knife can be useful). But not bad once you do it a couple times. The instructions are much better than nothing, and half the satisfaction is figuring out for yourself how to get from one step to the next.

The car mode is fun, and of course you can spin the one wheel to keep the audio going if you want to pass on rolling it around, but the skids are easier with the latter approach. Robot mode, as noted in another review, seems to fail full expectations. Yes, I have the same problem with mine as mentioned – it seems unresponsive to sound or motion, and shuts down after 30 seconds or so if no button is pressed. Interestingly, I don’t have the same issue with the first model. If I stand them facing each other and set them off, the earlier model will respond and continue interaction while the newer one obliviously quits unless prodded. Did they leave this feature out on the newer one?

As for the content, both models reflect their respective movie roles. I happen to like the earlier one better, but it’s a matter of taste. The doors fit better on the newer one, and the mask is cool but a hassle to get on. The Ultimate Bumblebee is a worthy addition to a collection, and many won’t care if the thing won’t respond unless you push a button. The new technology takes the transformer into a more pure “toy” mode, where it doesn’t perhaps stand out from the non-transforming competition. But it certainly opens a new dimension for the many-faceted transformers.

If you care about the responsiveness issue, might prefer a more musical, less serious audio content, and can tolerate some possible door issues, you might consider spending a few extra bucks and get the earlier model.

I just got my Ultimate Bumblebee today….and the instructions aren’t worth a flip. So, having to struggle with it, decided to keep this ‘Bee in Robot Mode. The Battle Mask does stay on, it has a clip you use in the front part that you snap in to keep it on. As far as the cannon however, mine hasn’t fired yet. Have pushed the button several times. He says 3 phrases, haven’t heard one song, and I’m wondering if my poor ‘Bee has a short in him. I am considering returning him for such a price.

As a result, if you like the ‘Bee, and are willing to risk it, try it. If not, stick with the Leader Optimus Prime. It’s Impressive, Realistic, and is much Cheaper.

I am impress with the design but the execution need more improvement. many complained the difficulties of transformation. I have to admire that it took quite a while for me as well, almost an hour. This is even harder than the optimus prime transformation, which i found it equally impressed. But the difficulties lie on the stiffness of the joints and fraglilites of this toy, in which I believe the quality of those characteristics should be reverse: softer joints and more rigid parts. During the first few times of transformation, bubblebee’s head either fell out or i had to pull it out to finish the transformation because it was “in the way” However, the look and movement of the bumblebee is great. The yellow paint could use more luster, give it a more metalic look. Other than the above concerns, the toy is great for teenager or adult, but not for kid.

my grandson has been asking for this toy for a while. he loves the puzzle effect of making a car into a robot. i like the educational quality of the toy. it encourages children to rationalize movement and placement. also from watching my grandson i would say it also enourages imagination. i think this is a good thing.

After reading the other reviews, Grandma purchased this for my son for his 8th birthday. It was so hard to get the pieces to move. It took too long to transform, so long my son gave up. Some pieces wouldn’t even move. We are returning this purchase before it has time to break! Not happy at all with this toy – it’s not made to be a toy & to be played with.

      Nicholson February 16, 2010 at 7:35 am

My son (who is ALMOST 5) LOVES Bumblebee, so his dad got him this toy, and then spent the next 2 hours of the evening trying to figure out how to transform it, the instructions are helpful… but not entirely accurate, better to just play with it until you figure it out!!! Not only was it complicated but when you first get it the parts are stiff, and even after you get used to it (and it loosens up) there are some parts that require a lot of force to “snap” into place… I was afraid I was going to break it. Parts popped off, but just as easily popped back on. BUT things started breaking after only a few days of play. First it was little pieces that my son didn’t notice were gone, then more critical pieces that made the fit not so tight… today after a little over 2 weeks of owning this toy, it broke in half, and super glue will not fix it. My son was in tears! I do not think my son was unusually rough with this toy, and I have witness (with my older child) older boys being JUST as rough with action figures, crashing them together in mock fighting/playing, and wrestling around. I do not agree with the age range of this toy, I really think it should start at as old as 10 (with the discretion of the parents… you know whether your child is good at puzzles… which is what this thing is to transform from one mode to another). My 9 year old had difficulty transforming this.
For OLDER children (or adults) this is a really neat toy, very sophisticated! In car mode it’s hard to tell it transforms into a robot! It stands well on its own as a robot (unlike some action figures that requires JUST the right balancing and hope that no one breathes on it)! This toy isn’t without its merits, but parents (friends or relatives) who plan on buying this toy for a child need to be warned about this toy. If I had gotten to “play” with this toy before I bought it, I would have NEVER let my son have it!
If you get this for your child be warned it is not durable, and YOU will be stuck transforming it back and forth. I am disappointed in this toy and will look for one that will last a little longer and more age appropriate for my child who likes to PLAY with his toys (rather than look at them… which is all THIS toy is good for)!

      Ostrin February 16, 2010 at 8:27 am

I just got the package and was disappointed because of the size and weight of this
autobot compared to Optimus Prime and Megatron whose prices are roughly the same.
I then went back to the item description and figured out why I expected it to be even
bigger and Prime and Megatron. Besides the dimension, it says 3 pounds (where Prime and
Megatron just 2.x pounds). Below in the shipping weight, it says 1 pound which I think
      is the actual weight.

Anyway, I think my sons will love it if it is great as other people posted.

      Ogunlalaka February 16, 2010 at 9:26 am

This transformer is pretty bad yes but I have found use for it! The plastic may be cheap, the arm cannon may be obnoxious and in the way of a decent transformation but the head mold is very nice. The 2007 Bumblebee is better made with a superior weapon and a weak head mold. Anyone see the obvious solution to my rather obtrusive dilemma? Correct! Switch the heads of your 2007 movie bumblebee and your 2009 version and you’re made in the shade! Then take the rest and feed it TO THE HOUNDS!!! or whatever it is the kids are feeding refuse to these days…

      Quirk February 16, 2010 at 11:04 am

My son is 4 (but very intelligent for his age, and this is not just a proud mother bragging). The transformation between car and robot (and vice versa) is complicated, it gets a little easier as you practice, but here’s my problem… I’M the one who had to do all the transforming (even my 9 year old daughter couldn’t do it), which I do not have time to sit there and work it back and forth at every whim of my 4 year old (which was about every 5-10 minutes). After a week pieces started BREAKING off, yes other pieces popped off (as mentioned in other reviews, I’m not talking about that) and I had no issue as long as I can pop them back in (most the time I was able to), first small pieces (that weren’t really important, or missed), finally (today) it broke to the point the toy is now trash! My son received this toy a little over 2 weeks ago. I do not recommend this toy for small children. My son is old enough to know better than stick things in his mouth and choke on pieces, and I do not think he was unnecessarily rough on them… no more than boys normally are, and boys TWICE his age are JUST as rough with action figure toys like this.
The transforming requires a lot of force for some pieces and hard on my arthritic hands, and a lot of times I was concerned I was going to break it myself. The toy is complicated and maybe some children can do it, but not mine!
I DO have these positive things to say about it, it is a really NEAT toy. In car mode its almost hard to tell it is a transformer. In robot mode it stands on its own with no careful balancing (and trying not to breathe to knock it over). The toy is neat, and for those old enough to appreciate it I think it is a good toy, but it is one of those things that is better to LOOK at than play with! If you are looking for something your little one can PLAY with this is not your toy!

      O'Bryant February 16, 2010 at 11:40 am

I got this transformers for my 4.5 y old. We have other transformers and it is fun to change the toy from car to robot. We all have lots of fun together. However, this one is the worst transformer I have ever seen. Like so many other customers have said it is impossible to click some parts in place which makes it impossible to transform. In our case, we have the robot just fine, but some parts do not click and stay in place when we transform into car. This is crucial because by not clicking and staying in place, the car just falls apart and can’t really transform into a car. I huge waste of money. PLEASE, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE.
