My brother in- law sent this train to my two year old son and husband for Christmas. When we put it together the night before we were amazed to see the quality and workmanship that went into this set. It really does have all the bells and whistles. Nothing was more priceless than waking up this morning and watching my son’s face when he first laid eyes on that train. He will have something special to share with his Dad and Uncle for years to come!

Lionel 12052 FasTrack Grade Crossover w/FlasherI’m a big fan of lionel trains when they came out with fastrack a couple years ago it was great it made my old trains run like new again with this crossover I brought it more realizm to your layout it does bells and flashes A+ all round.
I bought the Polar Express along with some tracks and and this crossing for my four year old. The concept is great and the workmanship is very nice. The only problem, and it is a big one — The poles come out at the joint even with a slight touch and the connecting wires break and, the lights go out. One could still play the sound but the repair of the wires is impossible because the way they are made. All in all, it is not worth the $60 that I spent.
If you’re looking for a step up from the Brio sets or other push or wind-up Thomases, this is the best one for kids over the age of 4. Thomas’ eyes go back and forth as he runs, and the set includes a power supply, Sir Topham Hat and two workers, Annie and Clarabel, two railroad workers, and a nice oval of track. The track is the same track that all of Lionel’s new O-gauge sets use, so you COULD start with a Thomas railroad now, add a Polar Express railroad next year, and so on.
Also, MANY, inexpensive O-scale accessories and building kits are available from companies like Bachmann (Plasticville), so a very nice railroad is possible for a fairly low sum of money. Or, use ceramic buildings from Dept. 52, Lemax, and Hawthorne Village. (The people are too big, though, except for the people that come with Hawthorne Village sets.) In other words, one set around the tree for the youngsters could grow into any of a dozen hobbies. And, let’s face it, for youngsters, Thomas is probably the best introduction to trains of any kind.

This is a good entry level lionel set. It does comes with Lionel’s cheapest 40 watt transformer which does not even have an accessory output however, so if you want to expand your set with lighted buildings, you will need to buy a new transformer. Overall a great product and good value for the money and the kids love it.
This was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my son, but I am afraid it did not make the cut. Here is why:
The good:
- Excellent quality figures, especially Sir Topham Hat
- Good quality FasTrack tracks and very good layout included
- Excellent look/feel of Annie and Clarabel – they seem like they would last forever, plus they have removal tops so that kids can put thinks inside
The not so good:
- Thomas felt “dinky” to say the least. We are used to reliable and strong Lionel engines, but this one was flimsy, and seemed very top heavy. The sounds out of Thomas were not at all what you might expect (i.e. similar whistle as from the show) and the connectors used between Thomas and the cars did not seem compatible with other Lionel sets, although I did not try that
- The transformer that comes along is of the low wattage variety, so if you expect to use it with other Lionel engines, keep in mind that only those with very low power requirements will work
- The moving eyes were not what I expected. Thomas looks strange going around in a plasticky-sounding engine with his eyes clickety-clack
So, back it goes, and the Lionel Polar Express one comes back (much, much better indeed).
I bought this set for my son when he was 6. It still runs the tracks held up and the transformer is excelent. over all this set is a good investment.
I bought this train set for my 6 yr. old grandson. He really loves the story and now he has his own “Polar Express”!
It is a very special toy and I hope he will be able to share it someday with his own children.
the set was easy to put together , and is sturdy. looks great, and the grandchildren loved it. esp. the smoke and whistle. wonderful toy, that will last them years. our grandchildren are 4 years old, and we bought the wooden version for them to play with and this one to keep til they are older.
Lionel Trains Polar Express Train Set – O Gauge
Product easy to setup, Max is 3&1/2 years old and had no problem playing with the set once assembled. Product arrived on time, service was excellent, my first purchase through Amazon, do it again in heart beat.

The purchase I made from you was a good choice. It is of course, a great starter set. It arrived in new condition and everything checked out OK. Great price! I will purchase again from you. Thanks again. Just in time for my grand-daughter to play with.
We purchased this to have a train to run under the Christmas tree for our Grandkids. This train is great! Very authentic and very well made. You will not be disappointed.

This is the newest in a series of bright-colored, sturdy Christmas trains drawn by an Atlantic locomotive that actually smokes. The boxcar plays holiday tunes as an elf chases a reindeer on the animated gondola.
The Lionel Fasttrack oval that is included goes together easily and looks great. The included Lionel power supply has plenty of power for this train.
The train and power supply are completely compatible with Lionel’s other O gauge offerings, including the Polar Express and Hogwarts’ Express trains.
